After arresting rape accused Narayan Sai and his followers in Rs 13 crore bribery case, police are also investigating role of his father Asaram, also a rape accused, in this case. Police suspect that Asaram has played a key role in arranging for money to disburse as bribe.
Police believe Asaram had a role to play since majority of the accused arrested in the bribery case are closely associated with him and were part of his trustworthy group.
Police arrested suspended police sub-inspector C M Kumbhani; former PRO of Asaram ashram in Ahmedabad Uday Sanghani, Surat builder Ketan Patel, Sanghani’s driver Dhiraj Patel, Narayan Sai’s followers Bhavesh Patel and Hitendra Vaghela, administrator of Jahangirpura Asaram Ashram in Surat, Mahesh alias Rupa Malkani and property broker Hasmukh Upadhyay. Of the arrested, Sanghani, Ketan and Malkani were key persons in arranging for Rs 13 crore cash.
Asaram is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail.
Police suspect that initially Sanghani, who was travelling continuously between Jodhpur and Gujarat, was directed by Asaram to act. Sanghani roped in Ketan and others. Sanghani met Sai in police custody with Kumbhani’s help following instruction from Asaram, police suspect.
Sanghani is said to have kept Asaram updated about all the developments in Gujarat. He was also a communication channel between Sai, when he was absconding, and Asaram in jail.
“Sanghani was in touch with Asaram and he is his key supporter. He is suspected of playing important role in delaying Sai’s arrest. He also updated Asaram about Sai’s movement,” said police.
