Another doctor has pleaded guilty in a long-running bribes-for-test referrals scheme. Federal prosecutors say 60-year-old Charles Goldberg of West Orange pleaded guilty Wednesday to a complaint charging him with accepting bribes.

He faces up to five years in prison and will forfeit $58,000, which prosecutors say represents the bribes he received from Parsippany-based Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services.

An internist whose practice is based in Montclair, Goldberg admitted accepting $1,800 in bribes each month through a sham lease agreement with BLS.

Prosecutors say 23 people — including 12 physicians — have now pleaded guilty in connection with the scheme.

They say the lab bribed doctors to refer patients and perform unnecessary tests, which resulted in more than $100 million in payments to BLS from Medicare and various private insurers.
