Financial Prosecutor Judge Ali Ibrahim Monday charged five employees of Beirut Port’s Customs Department over bribery and embezzlement, a judicial source told The Daily Star.
The case was referred to Beirut’s First Investigative Judge Ghassan Oweidat.
According to the source, the five employees had been involved in receiving bribes from merchants to smuggle in their imports without charging the legal custom duties.
Many controversies about corruption at the Customs Department have risen in the past, notably Al-Jadeed TV’s investigation of corruption at Rafic Hariri Airport that led to journalists from the station being attacked by security officers outside the Customs Office.
