Another doctor has pleaded guilty in a long-running bribes-for-test referrals scheme involving a northern New Jersey firm.
Federal prosecutors in New Jersey say 47-year-old Peter Deplas of Glen Head, New York pleaded guilty Tuesday to accepting bribes. He faces up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced Oct. 29.
Deplas also will forfeit $120,500, which prosecutors say represents the bribes he got from Parsippany-based Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services. They say he got the money in exchange for unnecessary test referrals.
Deplas admitted accepting the bribes through a sham lease agreement of $5,000 per month, as well as additional monthly cash payments of as much as $7,000.
Twenty-nine people — including 18 physicians — have now pleaded guilty in connection with the bribery scheme.
