A Bahrain official, who allegedly took a bribe of $31,000 (BD12,000) for dropping human trafficking charges against a restaurant, has been arrested, according to a report in Gulf Daily News.
The top government official, who was the director of inspections at the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), was reported to have told a manager at an Indian restaurant that he would drop a legal case if they could pay a bribe of BD12,000.
A sting operation was set up after the restaurant’s HR manager alerted the Criminal Investigation Directorate.
“Subsequently, an investigation was launched and he was arrested red-handed after obtaining a warrant from the Public Prosecutor and referred there,” the Interior Ministry anti-corruption’s, economic and electronic security director general Major Bassam Al Miraj said in a statement to Gulf Daily News.
Last year, Bahrain announced plans to introduce a new draft law as part of a crackdown on the misuse of public funds and the bribing of government officials.
