A contractor who allegedly tried to bribe a fire code official to squash more than $8 million in outstanding fines on buildings with fire code violations is now facing more counts.
Federal prosecutors say 48-year-old Victor Coca of West New York was indicted Thursday on an additional charge of paying thousands of dollars in bribes and other related charges.
Coca initially was charged in May.
Authorities have said Coca paid $7,000 in bribes to the fire code official, who was cooperating with the federal government, to eliminate fines at two buildings in West New York. Coca owned one of the buildings, while the other was owned by a friend.
A telephone number for Coca rang unanswered on Thursday afternoon. He faces a lengthy prison term if convicted on all charges.
