The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) of Sri Lanka says that a majority of the complaints received by the Commission in the first six months this year have been against local government members, grama niladharis and politicians.
Director General of the Commission, Lakshmi Jayawickrama said the Commission has carried out 71 raids during the first six months of the year.
She noted that of the complaints received, the majority were leveled against local politicians, grama niladharis, police officers and government administrative officials.
The official said a three-member committee has been appointed to recommend amendments to address legal impediments in the Bribery Commission Acts, No. 11, 1954 and No. 1, 1975 in order to carry out the Commission’s work more effectively.
According to Jayawickrama, the number of anonymous complaints received by the Commission has also increased during the first six months of the year.
The Global Corruption Barometer (GCB), an index of corruption released by Transparency International recently said Sri Lankan is the most corrupted institution in the country.
