Two police officers claimed trial at the Sessions Court yesterday to agreeing to accept a RM4,000 bribe to release a Cameroonian robbery suspect this year.
Assistant Superintendent S. Ravintharan, 50, and Inspector Suriati Mohd Shafie, 31, were alleged to have agreed to accept the money from Nurullizean Yahya to release her husband, Tchouanseu Tchounga Armand.
The Cameroon national was arrested to assist investigations into a robbery. Both officers were alleged to have committed the offence at the office of the Crime Investigation Division at Brickfields district police headquarters here on Jan 22.
Suriati also claimed trial to an additional charge of asking for an RM6,000 bribe from Nurullizean for the same purpose at the same place at around 1pm on the same day.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Nur Lokman Samingan applied for bail to be set at RM5,000 with one surety for Ravintharan and RM10,000 with one surety for Suriati.
Counsel Datuk P.M. Nagarajan asked for a lower bail because his clients had children. “He( Ravintharan) has worked for the police department for 32 years, and has three children to care for, while she (Suriati) has to look after two young children, aged two and three years old,” he said.
Judge Mohd Nasir Nordin set bail at RM4,000 bail with one surety for Ravintharan and RM6,000 bail with one surety for Suriati. He fixed Oct 9 for mention.
