Three businessmen, who allegedly offered bribes of Dh100,000 and Dh150,000 to a municipality inspector so that their companies would be allowed to park more trucks in the Fruit and Vegetable Market in Ras Al Khor, stood trial in the Court of First Instance on the charge of attempts to bribe an official.
While two of the defendants, an Indian and an Iranian, allegedly offered the bribes, the third, an Indian, was reportedly the mediating party between them and the municipality official.
“One of the accused (the mediating party), approached me in August last year, asking for parking lots to be allocated for some of the stores in the market. He offered to pay a sum of money for every parking space,” the inspector told the investigating prosecutor.
The inspector made the man believe that he was interested in his offer.
“He then said that he would pay me Dh150,000 if 10 parking spaces were allocated for the trucks of the stores of a certain company. He also said that another company would pay me Dh100,000 if they were given four parking spaces.”
The police arrested him at a shopping centre in Al Qusais on September 16 last year, after he reportedly met the inspector and paid him Dh210,000 and picked up ‘non-objection letters’ that parking spaces were allocated to the companies he had specified to the official.
