Sitting in his Bastrop County Jail cell, Mexican businessman Francisco Colorado Cessa told his son to take “ice boxes” and “seafood” to a pair of Mexican senators, prosecutors allege.
He also told his son to take money to the two senators and an official with Mexico’s state-run oil company Pemex, according to an assistant U.S. attorney. Colorado was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for trying to bribe a U.S. federal judge, but before that hearing federal prosecutors unveiled this new set of bribery allegations.
Colorado had already admitted to trying to get his son and business partner to bribe an Austin judge in 2013 as he awaited sentencing for helping the Zetas drug gang launder money through U.S. quarter horse breeding and racing. He tried to withdraw his plea on the bribery charge last year and go to trial, but a judge rejected that request and sentenced him to the maximum amount on Monday.
That sentence will run after Colorado serves 20 years for the money laundering conspiracy. He’s appealing that conviction and sentence, and his lawyer said Monday he’ll likely appeal the bribery case as well.
