Two years after an investigation was launched, a former jailer at the Robeson County Detention Center has been arrested for accepting bribes and providing contraband to inmates, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.
Raymond Foy Cummings was arrested Wednesday at the Lumberton Police Department by SBI agents. The 27-year-old was indicted by a grand jury on Monday, according to an SBI spokesperson.
Cummings began working at the Robeson County Detention Center on Dec. 7, 2010, and resigned on Sept. 14, 2012, after an internal investigation was launched. Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt then requested that the SBI investigate Cummings on accusations that he was giving contraband to inmates, the spokesperson said.
Cummings is charged with one count of felony conspiracy to bring contraband into a detention facility; one count of accepting bribes; one count of furnishing controlled substances to inmates; and one count of furnishing tobacco products to inmates.
According to a bill of indictment, Cummings provided marijuana, Percocet, tobacco, cigarettes and rolling papers to an inmate between Nov. 24, 2011, and Sept. 12, 2012. He received “multiple cash payments of $75” from two individuals for delivering controlled substances during that time, according to the document.
Cummings, who lives on Whistling Rufus Road in Pembroke, was jailed at the Robeson County Detention Center under a $17,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Robeson County Superior Court on Nov. 3.
Cummings is the son of Robeson County Commissioner Raymond Cummings, who represents District 5.
