Police traffic boss, Dr. Steven Kasiima said the officers were netted by the alert fraud squad set up recently to rid the department of corruption following numerous complaints by the public about corrupt traffic officers.
“Many of them have appeared before the disciplinary court and others have been reverted,” Kasiima said adding that the police will not relent on the operation to stem corruption. A bulk of the those arrested, he said, were from the city from police station such as Nsangi, Kawempe, Kajjansi, Old Kampala, Kanyanya and Jinja road. Two of those arrested were from Luweero.
Speaking at the police headquarters during the weekly police briefing, Kasiima seized the occasion to put the public on notice, warning that the police will starting today, intensify traffic operations to rid the roads of vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition (DMC) and rogue motorists now that the festive season has set in.
“There is a tendency for people to put DMCs on the roads during the festive season so as to make money and parents allowing their children who do not have driving license to drive. We will carry out operations and will not allow that,” Kasiima said.
Speaking at the same function, the Director criminal investigations and intelligence directorate Grace Akullo noted that 17 murder cases had been reported last week countrywide, one of the a 12 year old girl, Prisca Abiyo who was reportedly defiled and then murdered by her assailant.
The body of the girl, a primary three pupil of Naguru Katale, she said, was discovered by pupils of Dafodils Pre-School in Bukoto, a city suburb, alerted to it by a putrid stench. The body was discovered in an incomplete building.
“The posture of the already decayed body and the evidence around suggests that she was defiled,” Akullo said. The child she said had been sent out by her parents on November 19 to sell boiled maize but did not return, prompting them to report the matter at Kira Road police station on November 20. Two days later her body was discovered with the basket of maize and her under garments, nearby.
